I paint daily, mostly plein aire, (on location) and stay with a particular theme or subject until I've captured the feeling or emotion I have about it.
It's important for me to look for the design, shadow pattern and light effects of a scene. Using a limited palette I build up the painting letting areas of the under surface show through.
I've painted in other mediums before, but I find oils allow me to experiment more with texture and brush work.
My hometown of Milford, CT, is a small and beautiful city with 5 beaches, walking trails, and a state park. It's a continual source of inspiration for me.
I teach in my home Studio, and travel yearly to Monhegan Island to paint. I've been lucky enough to paint in France, Italy, Rockport, MA, and Vermont. This summer I head to the Dolomites in northern Italy.
I'm deeply inspired by the works of Claude Monet, Joaquin Sorolla, John Singer Saregeant, Eugene Boudin, Gustave Caillebotte, and Edouard Manet. Charles Sovek, Charles Movalli, Don Stone and Frederick Judd Waugh are some of the more contemporary artists whose work I study and try to learn from.
Art is an amazing journey , an adventure and a delight for the senses.
